Mad Meg Synopsis

Scene I

On a farm in a valley live two sisters, Martha and Meg. Everything is happy until their father dies, and then their life offers them only hard work. Meg works the farm, Martha the house. Meg gets over her grief, Martha wants to get away.

Then one day, Simon, a stranger appears, weary from fighting in far off wars. The sisters take him in. Meg falls in love with him, but he only has eyes for Martha. Martha just wants to leave.

Scene II

At the village dance Meg finally realises the strength of Simon’s feelings for her sister and makes a fool of herself in front of the whole community. They laugh at her and she leaves, cursing them.

Time passes. Simon and Martha marry and have a child, Sprog. But Martha is still unhappy and, one day, she leaves.

Meg meanwhile lives on the moor and has built a dam, stopping the water to the village.

Scene III

The villagers send Sprog to see the aunt she has never met, to try and get the water back. Meg makes a deal with this troubled child. She’ll give them the water if Simon will marry her before the assembled village. And this time no one must laugh.

The villagers all turn out but Sprog keeps stopping the ceremony with her drumming. Meg finally realises that she has wasted her life on this fruitless love for a man who will never love her, and gives the villagers their water. But when she removes a stone from her dam the trickle becomes a flood which engulfs the whole village.

The water settles. Meg has disappeared, leaving everyone else to build their lives again.
